AMORY – The Amory Rotary Club’s second annual Recognition of Police and Firemen of the Year program honoring firefighter Evan Branham and police Sergeant Eric Wiginton was held on Jan. 17.

Fire Chief Jimmy Bost presented Evan Branham with the award for firefighter of the year 2012. This award, instituted by the club’s past-president, Don Mitchell, is voted on by the recipients’ peers in their respective departments.

“Evan is a unique individual who gets along with everyone. When we go to a fire, we can always count on Evan,” said Bost.

Branham, a Smithville native, graduated from the MS State Fire Academy in 2009 where he received basic training in fire suppression, hazmat, and emergency medical services. Since then he has been trained in confined space rescue, rope rescue, and firefighter intervention rescue survival techniques.

Police Chief Ronnie Bowen presented Eric Wiginton with the award for policeman of the year 2012, stating that Wiginton always serves the department astutely and is continuing his education. Wiginton is an Amory native and has been with the police department since 2004. He was assigned to Amory High School as a school resource and D.A.R.E. officer in 2007 and was promoted to sergeant in 2008. Wiginton is currently serving as patrol supervisor and field training officer and plans to graduate with a master’s degree in Homeland Security from the University of Mississippi this fall.

“Consistency and working hard for Amory are my goals,” said Wiginton.

Judge Kevin Crook emceed the event. “I have a special place in my heart for firemen and officers. I know what they deal with and what kind of training is involved. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank you,” said Crook.
